In the last chapter, we saw that those who are Born Again become a new creation of the Holy Spirit and are connected with heaven in the presence of the Son, which was illustrated using Israel’s tabernacle that we saw set out in the Book of Hebrews. Yeshua expands on His teaching and commands to be Born Again to include being Born of the Water and Born of the Spirit – John 3:5. We’ll introduce what being Born of the Water includes in this chapter The Process of Perfection Our Process of Perfection looks like this:
Introduction When we look at being Born of the Water, we see that three elements are included – Faith, Repentance and Baptism. Faith Faith in the New Testament can be separated into two concepts – Hope that God will keep His promises. Belief that leads to action. Because Yeshua completed all the work to redeemed humanity from the sin and fall of Adam and Eve, men have hope that they will be saved from eternal physical death - resurrection. Moreover, Yeshua promises everlasting life to those who believe and act on keeping His commandments – both those in the Old and New Testaments being sanctified. We see this concept set out in John 3:15-17. “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life”. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
Repentance In the Bible and the Hebrew mindset, Repentance means “to return to the law”. In his book, The Tanakh, the Dictionary for the New Testament, Bradford Scott, wrote, “The comparable word [for repent] used in the [Old Testament] and the Hebrew culture is “teshuvah”. This word is generally translated “to return”, or “to go back”. “The very first word that we hear from [John the Baptist] is repent! To whom was he speaking this? To the nations? Of course not. The nations would not have a clue as to what to go back to! He was speaking this to the local Jewish leadership. [John] was pleading, on behalf of Jesus, for God’s covenant people to go back to the covenant. [Jesus’] first word to the Jewish leaders is repent!” (p. 75, 79, 80) John’s declaration to go back to the covenant or the Law was given to Israel to sanctify them. Yeshua’s command to be Born Again is designed to raise Israel to a higher reality – not break the Law and receive His presence. Baptism Baptism is not a new concept for Israel as ritual cleansing was an act of purification in the Law - indicating a return and compliance with the Law - sanctified. Yeshua extends the concept by commanding that Israel be baptized into His testimony. The testimony that would bring Israel into the Kingdom of God on the earth and everlasting life in the Kingdom of Heaven.
