In the last chapter, we introduced being Born of the Spirit. This week we will look at the concept of the Covenant Relationship under our review of being Born of the Spirit/Living Divine Truth. When Yeshua said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15., He was expressing to His followers the basis of being in a relationship with Him - if we want to be in a relationship with Yeshua, He is telling us to live His Law - His Commandments, which is His Truth. Moreover, the Commandments – the specific rules - can be segregated and associated with various Covenants and types of Relationships we see in the scriptures. The Process of Perfection Our Process of Perfection looks like this:
What is a Covenant? A biblical covenant includes specific obligations – terms – required of each party that establishes a legal relationship. While a contract creates legal obligations for the exchange of goods or services, a covenant creates a legal relationship. Marriage is an example of a covenant that creates a legal relationship. The man agrees to preside, protect, and provide – the woman agrees to help, counsel, and nurture children – they become husband and wife. We see Yehovah compare His covenant with Israel as a marriage arrangement. Elements of a Covenant Every covenant with God includes several elements. These elements include: A Covenant Name The Type of Covenant Relationship Parties to the Covenant The Type of Covenant A Covenant Sign Terms of the Covenant And sometimes a New Name When we look at the Sinai Covenant, we see the following:
Israel Covenant Relationship with Yehovah We will now examine Israel’s relationship with Yehovah in the context of covenants. A Chosen People Israel is God’s Chosen People by virtue of the relationship between Abraham and Yehovah under the Abrahamic Covenant. A Covenant People – the Sinai Covenant Israel, and a mixed multitude, was slated to be God’s Covenant People with their restoration in the Book of Exodus. Yehovah said that they would be a holy nation, a kingdom of priests, and a treasure to Him if they kept His Covenant – Exodus 19:5,6 “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.” Israel executes the Covenant – Exodus 19:7,8. “And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord.” Israel Sins and Breaks the Covenant In the 32 chapter of Exodus, we see Israel breaking the Covenant. Here, we actually see Moses breaking the tablets of the Covenant – Exodus 32:19. “And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.” In chapter 34, we see another set of tablets but these are not written by the hand of God, they are written by Moses – verses 27,28. Now Israel has the law written by man and not of God probably indicating a loss of status with Yehovah. (It is my position that if Israel had not broken the Covenant that Yehovah would have at some point established the Melchizedek Priesthood and revealed Yeshua’s redemption to Israel.) Israel Promised a New Covenant We see in Jeremiah that Yehovah promises to give Israel a new covenant that they will not break – Jeremiah 31:31-33. “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Yeshua Establishes the New Covenant When Yeshua ministers to His Jewish brothers, he declares that He is not abolishing the Law and Prophets but to make the Law full and complete – the Greek word here for fulfill – pleroo – means to make full or complete. – Matthew 5:17. “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to make the law full and complete.” Gentiles and the Covenant Gentiles and all believers thusly can establish a relationship with God by executing the covenants that we see in the Bible. Covenants Become Everlasting An important aspect of biblical covenants is that when covenants are executed they can become unconditional and everlasting after a trial of faith, which could be considered a Baptism of Fire. We see this concept in the Abrahamic Covenant. Abraham’s covenant with Yehovah becomes unconditional and everlasting after he is willing to sacrifice his only son to Yehovah.
