![]() Thoughts on Torah for Last Week: See our page on Spiritual Coaching: Exodus 28-30 This portion details the clothing, consecration and sacrificial duties of the priests. So this is a good place to introduce priesthood and what priesthood looks like throughout the scriptures. To lead us into this discussion, lets consider Paul’s brief writings of his two covenant discussion in Galatians chapter 4. Paul's Two Covenants Some have interpreted Paul’s discussion in Galatians 4 as the Old Covenant in the Old Testament and the New Covenant in the New Testament; and, have concluded that the Old Covenant has been replaced by the New Covenant. However, this is a misinterpretation of the scriptures. The two covenants Paul is referring to is the New & Everlasting Covenant, which was discussed in a previous post HERE, and the New & Everlasting Covenant modified to accommodate disobedient Israel. Moreover, the primary differences between these two covenants is priesthood and the presentation of redemption. In the New & Everlasting Covenant, we have Melchizedek Priesthood and an infinite human atonement in Yeshua; and, in the Modified Covenant, we have Levitical Priesthood and animal sacrifice. The table below summarizes these two covenants. Further, Paul states that perfection is achieved through the Melchizedek priesthood – Hebrews 7:11; and, the law of carnal commandments – the sacrificial system – reverted back to the power of endless life – in the atonement of Yeshua – Hebrews 7:16. This left much of the Torah law intact. It is scriptures like Hebrews 7:16 that people like to execute a wholesale rejection of the Torah instead of employing a narrow interpretation of the scripture, which is really here referring to only the sacrificial system. The Jewish Restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood Essentially what Paul is setting out in Hebrews 7 is a summary discourse of a Jewish restoration of the Melchizedek priesthood, which was initiated by Yeshua who then established it among His apostles, which then would have filtered down through the Church and finally received by fathers of families. Some religions today claim they have Melchizedek priesthood, but without the Torah their priesthood is empty, because a primary responsibility of the priesthood is to bring our lives in compliance with the law, which is what is required for us to have a relationship with the Messiah as His covenant people. Historical Summary The table below summarizes the chronology of the priesthood in the scriptures.
