Lesson 1: Layout and Structure of the Torah

Objective: This lesson will explain the layout and structure of the Torah with its books, portions, and sections.

Materials: Student Torah Reader, Koren Publishing

Title Page: The Title Page is entitled Ḥamishah Ḥumshei Torah meaning - five fifths of Torah - or five parts or five books of Torah.
חמישה  - Hamishah - Five
חומשי   - Humshei - Fifths
תורה     - Torah - Law

Table of Contents: The Table of Contents lists the the five books of Torah, the parshahs and page numbers for each parshah in Hebrew.
Starting from the top right and reading down - 
Beresheet (בְּרֵאשִׁית, literally "In the beginning")--Genesis
and followed by 12 parshahs and page numbers to the left.​



Shemot (שְׁמוֹת, literally "Names")--Exodus
and followed by 11 parshahs and page numbers.

Vayikra (וַיִּקְרָא, literally "And He called")--Leviticus
and followed by 3 parshahs and 7 parshahs on the next column to the top left.


​

Bemidbar (בְּמִדְבַּר, literally "In the desert [of]")--Numbers
​and followed by 10 parshahs and page numbers.



Devarim (דְּבָרִים, literally "Things" or "Words")--Deuteronomy
and followed by 11 parshahs and page numbers.

Left Side:

​Outside Margin:
Top: Name of the parshah -
 Beresheet -בְּרֵאשִׁית.

Center: Section number.

Bottom: Page nmber.

​Center: Section number - each parshah has 8 sections called aliyot which are read on Shabbat. The section number here is שני and is the Hebrew word for 2.
 Section 1 comes before section 2 and is not printed.

Bottom: Page number - ב or page 2.
