Lesson 2: Number System

Objective: Learn the Hebrew numbering system to access verses in the Hebrew Bible.

Materials: Student Torah Reader, Koren Publishing

Page, Chapter, and Verse Numbers: Use the following table to identify the page, chapter, and verse numbers.

Note: The numbers of 15 and 16 are written different because they would form a part of God's sacred name.

Section Number: The section or aliyah numbers for the parshahs use ordinal number - "first", "second", "third", and so on. The following table lists the Hebrew ordinal numbers. Ordinal numbers indicate the position of something in a list.

​The last or eighth section of a parshah is called the Maftir - מפטיר - meaning "concluder".

Exercises:

​1. Memorize the top row and right column of the Hebrew numbers so you can form higher numbers. 
​     (Use your aleph-bet flashcards here by writing the numbers on the back of the cards.)

2. Memorize the ordinal numbers.

​3. What page does the book of Numbers begin. In Hebrew? In English?

4. What page does the parshah אמר and aliyah שלישי begin?  In Hebrew? In English?

5. What page can you find the Ten Commandments - Exodus 20? In Hebrew? In English?

6. What page is the Shema on - Deuteronomy 6:4? In Hebrew? In English?

7. Write out the reference for the Abrahamic Covenant - Genesis 12:2 - in Hebrew?

8. Write out the reference for Passover at Leviticus 23;5 - in Hebrew?

9 Write out the reference for God's promise of life for living the Law - Deuteronomy 30:19 - in Hebrew?
