CHAPTER 3

The House of the Son

In chapter three of Letters to the Hebrew, we see the concept of a “house” used in the narrative. A house in the Tanakh or Old Testament can be seen as the collective descendants of a patriarch and would have been a concept that Judah could identify. The House of Israel is the collective descendants of Jacob, which would encompass the twelve tribes, their descendants and those considered part of the broader covenant people of God. Here, in the introduction of chapter three, we see two houses referred to – the house of Moses v.2,5, and the house of Yeshua v.6.
Yeshua’s House is Greater than Moses’ House
In the first six verses of chapter three, we see a comparison between Moses and Yeshua. Yeshua is worthy of more glory than Moses v.3. Moses is a “servant” in his house but Yeshua is a “Son” in His house. Moses leadership as a servant was a testimony of Yeshua who would come later v.5.

In verse six, we see that those who embrace Yeshua’s testimony are admitted into His house.

Yeshua’s House is Everlasting
Another concept that we should see in chapter three is that in verse one we see the name of Jesus/Yeshua used, but when we get to verse six Christ/Mashiach is used connecting us to the concept of the resurrection and life after death. Moreover, when we look at the third chapter of John, we see three types of life after death – being saved v.17, everlasting life v.16 and then eternal life v.15 (KJV).

Using our three grand keys of the Gospel, we can correlate these three types of life after death and concepts that we saw in chapter two with the Spirit, the Son, and the Father.

Israel's Tabernacle as a Model of Heaven
As a model of heaven - Israel’s Mishkan/Tabernacle - we can see this same sort of pattern of three and link all of these concepts together.

The House of the Father
We can extend our analysis further by considering that God the Father has a house, which we see mentioned in chapter 14 of John. Speaking to only His twelve disciples/apostles, Yeshua says to them at 14:2 -

"In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you

Judah is Warned About Rejecting Yeshua as the Son of God
The balance of chapter three is warning Judah not to reject Yeshua the Son of God by hardening their hearts v.8,15 not to go astray in their hearts v.10 not being able to enter into His rest v.11,18 having an unbelieving heart v.12,19 not to be hardened by sin v.13,17,18 to endure until the end v.6,14.

We also see that Israel’s disobedience is used as a example for not rejecting the Yeshua as the Son of God v.8,-10,15,16-18.
