Thoughts on Davidic Kingship The phrase Born Again is the most used and abused concept in Christendom. To be Born Again is the process to be transformed from our carnal and fallen nature into a state of righteousness. But this process is not automatic or even magic when we accept Yeshua as our redeemer – it takes time, effort, and a trial of faith. To fully understand being Born Again, we must start with ancient Israel and her first restoration beginning in Exodus. Process of Perfection In review, this is what our process looks like.
Ancient Israel to be God’s Treasured Possession When Yehovah restored Israel the first time, He said that they would be a holy nation, a kingdom of priests, a peculiar and treasured people to Him and who would be above all people – Exodus 19:5,6. “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.” Moreover, Yehovah would reveal His role to Israel to save humanity from the Fall of Adam and Eve in His descent into mortality, the Atonement, and His death and resurrection, which we see implied in the Threshold Covenant at Passover. Israel’s Sin When Israel sins with the golden calf in chapter 32, Israel’s status with Yehovah changed. He withholds the knowledge of Yehovah’s descent into mortality, His redemption of man, and the Melchizedek priesthood. Instead, Israel gets the Levitical Priesthood and the system of animal sacrifices. Israel Denied the Atonement and the Melchizedek Priesthood The big question here is why was Israel denied a knowledge of the Atonement and Melchizedek Priesthood? The Atonement and human proxy salvation are functions of the Melchizedek Priesthood. The reason for Israel’s denial is because the Atonement is not a revolving door. God expected Israel at some point to rise above their carnal nature and not sin. Yehovah knew that Israel wasn’t ready and gave them the system of animal sacrifices to teach them the relationship between sin and death. Personal Sin Another concept we see here in Israel’s restoration is Yehovah revealing His system of justice and definition of personal sin, which is set out in the law code that He gave to Israel and is an expansion of the Sinai Covenant. We can connect this concept with overcoming all sin as we move toward perfection.
Israel’s Stony Heart In the end, Israel kept breaking the Law and finally lost the kingdom that Yehovah had established for them. Ezekiel attributes Israel’s disobedience to a stony heart – Ezekiel 36:26. In other words, to Israel’s stubbornness and resistance to God's commands - a condition of a carnal nature. A New Heart and a New Spirit For Israel to keep the Law, they would need a new heart and a new spirit – Ezekiel 36:26. That process to have a new heart and new spirit would be revealed in the New Covenant. Integral to the New Covenant was Yeshua’s teaching on being Born Again – John 3, which is the subject that we will detail in the coming chapters. Yeshua Teaches of Being Born Again “Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus at night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” The New Covenant Essentially, the New Covenant is the Old Covenant – Sinai – without Israel breaking the Law with the Melchizedek Priesthood and Yeshua’s redemption.
